Why is Leech Therapy so effective?
The bite of a medicinal leech delivers what many describe as “an entire pharmacy in one drop of saliva,” thanks to its powerful blend of biologically active substances. Leech saliva contains a wide array of enzymes and compounds with proven therapeutic benefits, making it a valuable tool in modern integrative medicine.

These secretions include anticoagulants, vasodilators, anti-inflammatories, and natural anaesthetics that work synergistically to detoxify the blood, stimulate circulation, and nourish tissues. This enhanced blood flow helps prevent tissue death, supports the healing process, and encourages the body’s natural regenerative abilities.

To date, scientific studies have identified over 90 to 100 active proteins, peptides, and enzymes in leech saliva. These components have shown promise in treating a wide range of acute and chronic conditions by improving microcirculation, reducing inflammation, and supporting immune function.

How does it work?
Your leech therapist will carefully place one or more medicinal leeches on specific areas of the body based on your individual needs. Each leech makes a small, quick bite to attach to the skin and begin feeding. The initial bite may feel similar to a pinprick, but this brief discomfort is typically eased as the leech releases saliva containing a natural anaesthetic and a rich mix of beneficial enzymes—most notably hirudin, which helps prevent blood from clotting and enhances circulation in the targeted area.
The feeding process can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. During this time, each leech may consume up to a teaspoon of blood, expanding to several times its original size. Once fully fed, the leech will naturally detach and fall off on its own.
